Company History
Phoenix was founded in 1851 as American Temperance Life Insurance Company, a part-mutual, part-stock company that insured only those who abstained from alcohol. In 1861, with the temperance movement waning, the company changed its name to Phoenix Mutual Life Insurance Company, choosing as its symbol the mythical bird thought to represent prosperity, rejuvenation and immortality.
In 1992, Phoenix merged with the Home Life Insurance Company of Brooklyn, N.Y. to form the Phoenix Home Life Mutual Insurance Company. In 2001, Phoenix converted itself to a stock company, returning more than $1 billion in retained value to its policyholders.
Since our demutualization, we have exited none-core businesses and refined our strategy to focus exclusively on providing wealth management services to affluent and high-net-worth individuals and institutions.
Today, The Phoenix Companies are headquartered in an architecturally distinctive two-sided building at One American Row in Hartford, Conn., that was recently added to the National Register of Historic Places.
