At first glance, the qualities of our new chief actuary officer may sound at odds with each other. We need a visionary and a realist. Someone who has a celestial view of SAIF and its place in the world and is rooted in the microscopic details of our data and finances. Someone who can dissect statistical models with other actuarial minds and discuss them in plain language with executives, board members, and colleagues who don’t live and breathe numbers. 

What we’re seeking in a chief actuary officer is not as much a dichotomy as a unique blend of innovation, passion, and data-driven leadership.  

In the day-to-day you’ll manage the loss reserving process and review the statutory financial statement; oversee the actuarial ratemaking and rate filing process; set the rates for large accounts; maintain the economic capital model and make recommendations to the CFO, executive team, and board on surplus levels; manage SAIF’s reinsurance program; perform actuarial analysis and advise executives and managers; and work with the board-appointed actuary.  

As for experience, membership in the CAS (FCAS or ACAS) is required. You also need exceptional communication and change management skills and experience managing a team.

Required qualification

• Professional membership in the Casualty Actuary Society (FCAS, or ACAS for exceptional candidates).

Recommended qualifications

• Ten years of actuarial experience with increasing responsibility and significant leadership experience in workers’ compensation or other property/casualty insurance functions.

• Five or more years of high-level strategic planning experience.

• A bachelor’s degree in business, actuarial science, mathematics, finance, economics, or related field

• Other combinations of skills and experience may be considered.
